Live on Youtube

Blues week continues this afternoon on with a live-streamed lesson on my Youtube channel. One of my main themes this week is how to take potentially vague, intangible ideas like groove and improvisation and find specific, hands-on ways to get better at them. In yesterday's lesson on groove, I went through a basic version of the eight bar blues "Motherless Child," so in this afternoon's live stream, I'll walk you through a more embellished version, the kind of thing you might play the second time you state the melody. Specifically, we'll look at how to take the melody up the neck, how to use double stops to fill out the sound, and how to extend the original eight bars of the tune with something called a tag, using a combination of chord substitutions, syncopation and blues licks.

The live stream starts at 2:30pm Central at the link below and, to quote Arlo Guthrie, "all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it comes around on the guitar." Well, and go to the link below:

Tomorrow I'll be back with a seven-step process for turning "Motherless Child" into a complete arrangement. In the meantime, If you missed either of the first two lessons, you can find them at the links below. If you stop by, leave a comment or a question if you've got one!
