The Wit And Wisdom Of Aerosmith

if it involved guitar. Interviews with arena rockers, with obscure roots relics and all points in between; instructional columns about bass guitar, pedal steel, studio work, whatever; and of course the ads – all the ads, any ads, for every kind of gear, gadget, album, book, life-changing pedal, revolutionary amp or new brand of string.

At one point, Joe Perry of Aerosmith had a solo record coming out, and they ran a full-page promo for it in the magazine. In a classic instance of '70s counterculture lite, the ad showed Perry standing at the head of a board meeting, surrounded by middle-aged suits. Leaning over the conference table in regulation leather and denim, with the reel-to-reel tapes of, presumably, the masters of his new album in hand, the guitarist scowled into the lens under the caption "Let The Music Do The Talking." I took this slogan to have the double meaning of A) Joe Perry does not sing on this record and B) these suits wouldn't know a cool record if it sliced off the tops of their combovers.

This week, while I'd like to continue in this reflective yet snappy vein for yet a few more paragraphs, I am of a similar mind as vintage Joe P. I have a new video posted to Youtube this morning, and I am inclined to, for lack of a better phrase, let the teaching do the talking. Mosey on over to the Fretboard Confidential channel at the link below, and I'll show you how to put cool blues licks over a I-IV-II-V turnaround:

Blues Licks Over A Jazz Turnaround In E

Meanwhile, if the suits call back, I'm out.

More soon,

P.S. On Saturday, March 12th, I'll be offering a revised and updated version of my workshop Blues Up The Neck! I'll have more information on that, including what I'll be covering and how to sign up, early next week.
