Orcs, And Gorgonzola

Published: Fri, 02/10/23

. Last week the city of Austin more or less shut down for the week as two nights of freezing rain wrought complete havoc on the trees, power lines and anything related. At first I just thought it was ridiculous – they effectively canceled school for four straight days without a single flake of snow coming anywhere near the city limits. But as neighbors and friends continued to go without electricity for days on end and the extent of the arboreal damage became clear, it got a lot less funny.

Casa Fretboard dodged most of the impact; our block continued to have electricity and no big limbs came down around our house. My studio lost power, which is why there was neither newsletter nor new Youtube lesson last week. Still, the week wasn't a total loss – if anyone wants to discuss any of the finer details of what, exactly, could possibly be motivating the orcs in Peter Jackson's The Return of the King, I'm your guy. Also, I have more than one trenchant point to make about not bothering with Gorgonzola cheese until it's truly reached room temperature.

This week, of course, I have faced the prospect of getting back in the groove after my impromptu winter break. Which has reinforced my belief that half the reason to articulate one's practice agenda in clear, specific and limited terms is to make it easier, if not in fact easy, to get back on the pony after being away. It is easier to sit down and do something for fifteen or thirty minutes than for an unspecified amount of time, and, once sitting, it is easier to get started if you know exactly what you're there to do.

Arguably, that kind of clarity is the number one rule for getting the most out of your practice time, and I go into this idea in more detail in today's Youtube lesson, which you can find at the link below:

The #1 Rule For Getting The Most Out Of Your Practice Time

This month in the Fingerstyle Five membership, we're focused on how to coordinate your fingers over an alternating bass. It's an essential skill, whether you're learning your first tunes, starting to improvise, or anywhere in between, and these lessons break everything down into specific exercises so you always know exactly what to practice and how it will help you improve your playing.
