Three Degrees From Keef

Published: Fri, 06/16/23

I've told this one here before, but ages ago, at the end of a recording session I did once in Brooklyn, I heard this great Keith Richards story. Someone at the session had once been a PA or some such thing at a company doing pre-production for a promotional video involving the Rolling Stones. As she told it, they were all sitting around in a conference room the day before the shoot – her, the rest of the production team, and at least a couple of the Stones themselves. "Ok," someone said, wrapping up, "is there anything else we need to go over before tomorrow?"

"Two fings," said Keith. "I'm going be late. And I don't wanna be kept hangin' around!"

So, about today's Youtube video: two fings. It's more of an editorial than a lesson. And – well, shoot, now I forget what the other thing is. But since I've been dividing my time lately between the usual fingerstyle material and some of the swing and bebop stuff, I thought I'd take a minute (or twelve) and explain a bit about how I think those two things actually fit together, and why. Should Blues Musicians Learn About Jazz?

I was in part prompted to consider this just now because my Bebop For Beginners workshop is taking place in just over a week, on Saturday, June 24th. You can find out more about that, and sign up, at this link:
