Behold, the alternating thumb

A mystery, it can become

When necessary to be plied

While fingerpicking with a slide

The challenge is to play the licks

on top, all while the thumb still picks

The bass notes out, but doesn't stumble,

Wreck the train, or start a rumble

Best to do this work in phases

Starting out with simple phrases

Up the neck and at the nut

Getting clear on what is what

Then bringing in the thumb to score

The bass notes on strings six and four

And underpin your new slide moves

With fingerpicking's classic groove
