Yesterday was Father's Day, so while half of Casa Fretboard is currently out of town, I got to spend the morning running around with my daughter. Or rather, getting chauffeured around, as she has recently come into possession of her driver's license and is determined to make the most of it.
Which meant, for starters, someone else took the family dog to the park while I drank my coffee and stared out the
window. Over breakfast, we finished the New Yorker crossword we'd started a week earlier. Next, we headed downtown to blow my tip money from last week's bluegrass gig at Book People and Waterloo Records, before visiting the studio so my daughter could practice the drums.
The afternoon was, by comparison, positively dissipated – I reread the first half of Psmith In The City, scrounged together enough butter for half a batch of cookies, and checked in on Ms.
Fretboard's morning kayak expedition somewhere in Michigan.
All of which is to say this Monday morning finds me well-rested, bronzed and fit, ready for the people's business. Which, as things currently stand, consists of delivering to you the details about the next Reliable Source workshop, coming your way on Saturday, June 29th.
The short version goes like this: if you like chords, improvising and the blues, you will probably like Chord Melody Blues.
Over the two hours of this live-streamed class, we'll look at all the different ways you can solo on the blues using three- and four-note chord shapes on the upper strings.
Whether you're looking for ways to harmonize blues licks, create driving swing riffs or drop chord hits into your single-note soloing, Chord Melody Blues will put the voicings and hands-on licks you need into your vocabulary, and help you understand exactly when and how to use them in your own
solos.
This workshop is designed to stand on its own, but will also complement previous Reliable Source classes like Freddie Green Chords, The Swing Scale, Bebop For Beginners, Kenny Burrell Chords, and Chord Substitutions.
And don't worry if you can't attend live: everyone who signs up will have on-demand access to a complete replay of the whole workshop for an entire year.
