One of my favorite Duke Robillard stories: At the end of a show with his band Roomful of Blues, Duke got offstage to discover none other than Count Basie had been in the audience for the last set.
A dumbfounded Duke, who worshipped the Basie band and its star soloists Lester Young, Buck Clayton and Jimmy Rushing, suddenly found himself tongue-tied while trying to sputter out his feelings for the Count and
his work.
"And Basie was so cool, man," recounted Duke. "He just looked at me and said, "Duke, play it. Don't say it."
